IMT "Dojang" Rules

Discipline is measured by a students approach to training; It’s a tradition in Tae Kwon Do and the key to your success and achievements. The basic principles found in these rules have been a part of Tae Kwon Do since the beginning.

As a sign of respect you must:

ALWAYS BOW when:

  • Entering or leaving your Do Jang.

  • Always bow to your instructor prior to the commencement of class, then to all black belts in order of rank or as they arrive. The lower rank always bows first with their feet together.

  • If you arrive late to class or must leavet the do jang, you must come to the side of the front line facing your instructor, wait until you have his/her attention, bow then move to the back of the class and warm up. You should join in with the back line when ready. You will be told by your instructor to line up in order of rank when the opportunity arises.

Always be courteous and pay respect to your instructors, other students  at your Do Jang by:

  • Paying full attention while training and obey your instructors at all times
Don’t talk while your instructor is talking, never stand with your arms folded in front or stand with your hands on your hips either stand with them by your side or behind you’re your lower back in at ease stance.
  • Never dispute with a higher belt or lose your control or your temper at any time. Any grievances or questioning the application of a technique should be discussed in private after class is finished.

TKD is a contact sport therefore:

  • Do not have long finger nails or toe nails.
  • No jewellery is to be worn. Earrings and necklaces are worn at own risk, but certainly no rings, toe rings or watches are to worn during training. A wedding band is the only exception.
  • Use your time wisely while waiting for class to begin by practicing your techniques, patterns, by stretching and warming up ready for your training session.
  • Training cards are to be placed on the table for signing prior to training. Payments should also be fixed up before the commencement of class.
  • Always inform your instructors if you are going to be absent from training for more than one week.
  • Ensure that your uniform is clean and presentable, and be in complete uniform while training at all times.
Face the back of the room and away from your instructor while adjusting your uniform. If told to fix uniforms by instructor, wait until you are told to turn around.
  • Always respect the potential of your martial art, never misusing it and always demonstrating self-control and discipline.

Rules of sparring:

  • WTF: No kicks below the belt or to the back, and no punches to head.
  • IMT: all elements of fighting with control (i.e. kicks below the belt, punches to head allowed only when gloves are worn).
  • In sparring the lower belt will set the level of contact. Therefore if you strike or hit hard you should be ready to take the same level of impact back. This does not mean in a vindictive way. The higher belts have more control of their kicks and punches than the lower belts, so please be aware of this and always demonstrate self-control and discipline.
